145 MEPs tabled a motion to refer the EU-Mercosur deal to the Court of Justice of the EU

The EPP wants to block that motion at a key meeting TONIGHT

Why? If the deal is legal, let the courts say so

What’s the EPP afraid of?

Is it because they think the court will find an issue?

📢 Today's trade hearing on the EU-Mercosur deal features mainly business voices who stand to gain - but what about the voices of animals?

A missed opportunity for a balanced debate on a deal's real impacts - the risk of increased animal suffering through intensified factory farming. #StopEUMercosur

Today I had the opportunity to explain to MEPs why we need to #StopEUMercosur deal:

- it will further fuel animal cruelty 🐔🐮 & antimicrobial resistance 🦠 & deforestation 🔥
- its ‘rebalancing mechanism’ is a threat for future sustainability legislation 🫣
Today's #AnimalWelfare Intergroup session focused on the EU-Mercosur trade deal, and the negative impacts it would have for animals, public health and biodiversity.

Imported chicken meat and beef must be conditioned to EU standards before ratifying the deal!

Trade deals undermine #AnimalWelfare standards & fuel factory farming abroad 😱

Great that the upcoming #EndTheCageAge will apply to imports 🥚🐷🐮

But as the EU imports lots chicken meat, new EU law must also require that imports comply with the new density & breeding standards 🐔

📣 LET'S GET LOUD FOR PETS! 📣

Dear MEPs, this Thursday we urge you to support:

The OCTOPUS Act is good news for trade & #AnimalWelfare 🐙

It aims to ban the commercial octopus aquaculture in the US & the import of commercially farmed octopus 👏
OCTOPUS Act Reintroduced in the U.S. Senate
The federal bill would prevent the industry from gaining traction by banning commercial octopus farming in the U.S.

Very happy to share why import requirements related to #AnimalWelfare are necessary to stop cruelty in the EU & in partner countries 🐮🐔🐷

Merci aux MEPs @erics40.bsky.social @charlesgoerens.bsky.social, Camilla Laureti & Benoit Cassart pour l’organisation 👏🏼

Good news for animals in Europe 🇪🇺🇬🇧!

This common regulatory framework will ensure that any progress - including the EU ban on cages - applies in the UK 🐔
🇪🇺🇬🇧🐾 Big news for animals! The EU & UK have committed to closer cooperation on animal welfare via a Common Veterinary Area. This could reduce complications and delays for live animal transport & raise #AnimalWelfare standards on both sides of the Channel.

🙋🐮 European consumers agree that animal food imports should be subject to the same welfare rules as those produced in the EU.

👉The EU's upcoming revision of its #AnimalWelfare legislation is a ✨golden✨ opportunity to ensure this. #StopCruelImports event in Brussels with Federacja Konsumentów today.

Today at the @eurogroupforanimals.org event on trade panelists agreed that the 🇪🇺 market - including consumers, farmers and producers - needs import requirements related to #AnimalWelfare, even more with the controversial #EUMercosur FTA in the pipeline ‼️

@ec.europa.eu lets do it !

For years I've been advocating for tariffs for the protection of legitimate objectives such as #AnimalWelfare.

These "reciprocal" tariffs make no sense: they are based on a simplistic calculation & ignore how trade rules and supply chains work.

They might also backfire and hit the US economy.
As Donald Trump unveiled his list of tariffs on American trading partners in a bold attempt to reduce the United States' trade deficit, many are questioning how the duties were calculated.
Trump’s tariff math is crazy, says ‘Wisdom of Crowds’ author
James Surowiecki challenges the White House’s rationale for punishing Europe, China, India and Japan with reciprocal tariffs.

I was very happy to present to 🇪🇺 & 🇨🇦 officials why the EU seals regime remains fit for purpose 🦭

The EU seals regime was a big milestone for #AnimalWelfare. Let’s continue discussions on how to better implement it rather than weakening it.
We're happy to be presenting at the #CETA 🇪🇺🇨🇦 Civil Society Forum today on #seals! 🦭

The EU seal regime restricts the placement of seal products on the EU market & 80% of EU citizens still support this.

To protect public morals & #AnimalWelfare, it's important that the EU seals regime remains!

This may have implications for #AnimalWelfare because if the 200% tariffs on 🇪🇺 wine & spirits happen, expect stronger calls in favour of trade agreements, including with #Mercosur and 🇮🇳
🚨 BREAKING: US President Donald Trump has threatened a mega 200 percent tariff on EU wines and spirits.

And no worries, applying EU #AnimalWelfare standards to imported products is compatible with #WTO agreements.

Actually, the EU slaughter regulation already applies to third countries exporting to the EU.

Not meeting EU #animalwelfare standards? No thank you 🛑✋

As part of its Vision on the Future of EU Agriculture, the @ec.europa.eu stated that any future legislative proposals on animal welfare will also apply to imported products!

The #EUMercosur deal is toxic ❌

It will stimulate feedlots (which are already increasing) & intensive poultry production in South America 🐮🐔

The deal also allows partners to challenge ANY future legislation (even if legitimate) if it nullifies trade concessions in terms of business opportunities.
Ahead of the #EPlenary debate on the EU-Mercosur trade deal today, we're calling on MEPs to block this toxic deal, for the animals, people and the planet.

‼️ EU trade policy cannot fuel cruel intensive farming practices abroad.
