Until fairly recently, I thought that *was* the correct pronunciation. (Yes, I was homeschooled and didn’t know how to pronounce many of the words I learned from books.)

And there’s even wonkier scenarios. Like, 5.56x45mm NATO is what the AR-15 shoots. It was developed from the .223 Remington and they have an identical case size. However, the NATO round is higher pressure, so a rifle chambered in .223 shouldn’t shoot the NATO round but the reverse is fine.
