Freakishly warm weather this week is really working for our fall garden. Im proud of this lettuce grow, also a great year for these purple stemmed kale which are very sweet. Multiplier onions and garlic are up and Ill mulch them with leaves before the freeze. Turnips and beets still growing too.

I spent an hour playing my leaf guitar for my favorite boxwood grove & then when I got home I hooked it up to some contact mics & set it on fire.
It saddens me that the ruins have no mention of the lives of the people who built the mansion & planted its gardens, but the boxwoods remember it all.

As far as historical context for the site goes I give the ruins an F. Theres not one mention of the people who were enslaved on its grounds & tended the gardens.
For this location I recorded several of the largest boxwoods I could find then I collected leaves & stuffed my guitar full of them.

Back on my boxwood recordings today. These boxwood at the Barboursville mansion ruins witnessed the burning of the building so I’m stuffing my guitar with leaves from the plants that lived through that and making music with them. Hoping to set the leaves on fire and record the whole thing tonight.

@democracynow is the best climate/COP coverage in the US. More AI means more pipelines and global heating. It is a scheme by the Fossil Fuel industry to force a market for the fracked gas no one outside the US wants.

Fall stuff is exploding rn. We are in pretty peak cabbage growing weather though it is a little dry still. Went big on mustard greens this year. These are the old fashioned ragged edge from SXSE, and also looking forward to these purple stemmed kale plants.

Pretty pumped about the new incense holder I made yesterday. This is an old 20s/30s teacup I found in the mud in the old mill race behind the mill. Someone must have dropped it into the water by accident and it sat there for nearly 100 years.

Not bad. Mostly whites and reds tonight. I’ve never experienced as much aurora as we have in the last two years.

I was glad to find it because this whole section of woods has been logged recently. Also adding to heaviness of this trip was the fact that the whole area is showing signs of the Beech disease, making this potentially one of the last years well experience this beautiful peak leaf beech grove.

It’s hard to know exactly how old this tree is but it is fair to say that it likely witnessed this landscape before the civil war when the region was among the oldest and fiercest of the American Slavocracy, on through to the modern era, when woodland trails were abandoned for car infrastructure.

My friend Roger who passed away in 2019 took me to see this tree almost a decade ago. Roger was a true keeper of local history and folklore in his section of the Northern Neck and told me he understood this marking to be the last survivor of five beech trees used as trail markers through the woods.
