Back in June, when Dad had a 3-week-stint in hospital out-of-town (& Mom stayed with him), I went thru some of the boxes at their new house & did some light re-arranging...setting-out some of Dad's books in the living room. It was then I re-connected with this gem from my childhood #ThingThursday
Arranged on a green-&-white-plaid wool blanket, a hardback copy of Denis Gifford's a Pictorial History of Horror Movies [Hamlyn, 1973] rests for the viewer to see. The title of the work has "HORROR MOVIES" in yellow bubble letters; overlaid against Tom Chantrell's striking greenish-cast-images of a few of filmdom's most famous creepy characters, such as; Lon Chaney, Sr. as the Phantom; Peter Cushing as Dr. Frankenstein; both Béla Lugosi and Christopher Lee as Count Dracula (interestingly, Chantrell has added red blood dripping from the corner of each vampire's mouth); and a giant head of Frankenstein's monster (looking more like Glenn Strange or Lon Chaney, Jr. in the Jack Pierce makeup than Karloff). Underneath the dust jacket (in remarkable condition for as often as this book was consulted over the last 52 yrs), the red of the bookcloth binding makes a gorgeous contrast.

I unboxed hi--Oh, riight--NOW I see why certain relatives so "generously" gave TubSanta to my parents...
TubSanta unboxed & sitting on a flat surface. The scrub brush on his back (that moves up & down when wound) has been shittily repaired with sub-standard ceramic glue (to the point where most of the brush is barely hanging by a single thread of browned adhesive). Similarly, the base of Santa's coat-tree has been "repaired" by gluing shaft/hat/coat to the base at a 33° slant.

As I continue to unbox yuletide items for display, a glimpse at one of the decoration sets my grandparents used to arrange in their bathroom (TubGurl Mrs. Claus sold seperately)

This is much safer than the steel pans (painted green) that offered both a reservoir for tree water RIGHT NEXT TO hot electricity (I don't have a picture of the one we had in the old garage, but here's a similar model for sale on eBay for a ridiculous figure)

A center rest is provided for the Christmas tree (complete with 4 thumbscrews for straightening); and on an outer orbit (settling lower than the water reservoir), ceramic sockets are recessed for light bulbs. Additionally, the base offers an auxiliary pair of two-prong-plugs for the lights on the tree (imagine the current passing thru your body every time you went to hang an ornament!). ...we had a late-'20s version of this base (complete with rotting cloth cord--but 2 "GE Mazda" colored bulbs that still miraculously worked. Needless to say, we've never plugged in our version.

I missed #ThingThursday last week on account of Thanksgiving, but @sadknob.bsky.social might most appreciate what I'd set-aside to share: a mid-'30s Marathon-brand-combination-lighter-&-cigarette-case (get a load of that flame!--& space for over half a pack of unfiltered ciggies)

Opened case reveals spring-loaded-props to keep cigarettes from falling out, among the elaborate gold chasing inside. Top quarter of unit does not open, as that's the reservoir for the lighter above. One of the best photos I've seen of myself in the last ten years (taken by a 4-yr-old-kid on film that expired when his parents were still in Kindergarten)

It's been nearly a year, but I finally developed this suspect-roll (it was NOT double-exposed! but it WAS heat-damaged--which simply adds to the overall shittiness) from 2024's #ShittyCameraChallenge ... using it in the Pentax was exactly what was needed at that moment in time. Here's a selection:
Blonde chi-hua-hua wearing a red-white-&-blue-winter-sweater stands on the middle of a bed draped in a navy-blue-&-goldenrod-chenille-blanket (on top of which has been layered a granny-square-Roseanne-style-afghan at the foot of the bed), just in front of a soap dish containing pocket change & a light-brown-wooden-cigar-box (as well as something wrapped in white paper--I can't recall what it was). In the lower-left-corner, a date of "12 22 '94" is displayed in red digital numerals (as the calendar on the Pentax only went up to 2019), and the overall image has the optical quality of color film left in high temperatures for a long period of time (though just enough color to ascertain what the shades might be in real life); taken Sun.22.XII.2024 on KodakGold100 film (expired at least 07/1993); developed & scanned by meeeee. The photographer (bearded bloated guy, wearing Santa hat) peers down into camera lens, seemingly over top of younger subject (photographer's nephew, wearing long brown hair parted down the center) with a fireplace mantel (sporting stockings hung by the chi-minnie with care). Sprocket holes from light & developing are all up & down the right margin of this image (and it sports a reddish cast of color film begun to decompose). Taken Tue.24.XII.2024 on KodakGold100 film (expired at least 07/1993); developed & scanned by meeeee. Overly-surprised, semi-geriatric white boxer looks at camera, with a folding table set up imemdiately to her left. Behind can be seen several drinking wessels on an endtable (in front of which has been stacked a blue crocheted afghan. The flash was deployed for this shot (as evidenced by the yellow-green-lights in pupper's eyes, and reddish cast of color film begun to decompose makes white boxer look pink). Taken Wed.25.XII.2024 (though the date in the lower right corner instead shows "12 25 '94," due to the Pentax's internal calendar only going up to the year 2019) on KodakGold100 film (expired at least 07/1993); developed & scanned by meeeee.

A story within the picture:
An outer door opens into a backyard; with fences, trees, a clothesline the photographer forgot to stow in the garage before the weather changed, and the lawn covered in a couple inches of fine snow. The air appears clouded from all the fine white particulate still blowing past in the background. Our gaze now shifts lower, to right outside the open doorway--where several sets of small canine tracks indicate a tiny aminal sauntered out to go potty (with intent on exploring the frozen wasteland before her), but heard the howling winds and felt the freezing spray, and decided to piss freely 6 inches outside the door, before turning-round to RUN back to the warmth inside.

At any rate, that shot above is the only one on the roll that doesn't have the pronounced line from where I pre-soaked the film (for some reason I never fill my Jobo tank full enough to get a complete heating of the roll enclosed

When you shoot everyday scenes with an uncoated glass lens, you often capture timeless images (even if you were a couple inches off on your focusing)...

...also--I've had this TCS mixer/timer/heater for FIVE YEARS, & this is the FIRST TIME I've been able to figure out how to use the integrated timers...

Just about to do something to help me develop those 4 rolls of color film I've had ready since last Christmas (maybe this will also help me finish other color rolls floating around)

...the last time I saw them, I was halfway thinking, so I put them in the lower-right-drawer of Great-Grandma-Gladys's Singer (which I'm using as an ersatz desk), next to extra shoelaces & old cellphones & spare phonograph reproducers (it made sense at the time)
Unfortunately pickled drawer of a late 1890s/early 1900s Singer foot-treadle sewing machine; drawer opened to reveal [among 3 late '20s/early '30s phonograph reproduces, 2 pr of shoelaces, & an indeterminate number of former cellphones] a Sylvania & RCA box--each containing a vacuum tube (the kind that was used in electronics--particularly electronics having to do with sound reproduction [radios/phonographs] ca. 1929-60).

The most "historic" Broadway show I got to see had Ann Hampton Callaway in the St. James Theatre (SWING, ca. 2001); but I would've given my eye-teeth to travel back to see Merman in Anything Goes at the Alvin--with any luck, the same night Mel Brooks's Uncle Joe took him to see the same show...
Page 30 of Mel Brooks's "All About Me," with a remembrance of a Saturday matinée performance of Porter's Anything Goes at the Alvin on 52d (now the Neil Simon): "In those days the cast didn't depend on microphones like Broadway shows do today. When Ethel Merman belted out 'You're the Top' even though Uncle Joe and I were two miles away in the cheap seats, it was thrilling but maybe TOO loud. What a voice! They said she could hold a note longer than the Chase National Bank. I thought she was the greatest thing since chocolate milk. I had goosebumps."

December 2009 (back when I still had a flip-phone w/o camera, so it's taken on a 3MP digital camera that I had to then attach to a laptop to upload the photos by sending them as verizon sms attachments...also, more of my face than anyone's seen...)
Black-&-white shot of a grinning figure looking right--wearing a bowtie, sweater, beaver coat, & homburg hat while standing in a light-walled-room with a floor-model-Victrola (opened for play, but also showing a muted trumpet perched across the turntable). The figure is not quite bloated, and definitely not bearded (though there is some stubble from a few days' not shaving). Hat was a faun-color, accenting perfectly the pumpkin-colored-shirt layered under an avocado green v-neck-sweater, with the dark-rust-brown-shade of the bowtie underneath the repeating yellow sunburst pattern setting off the reddish-brown of the coat (and the green in my hazel eyes). I sadly no longer have the hat (or the VV-XI--and the shirt wore out sometime in 2011), but everything else is still around & gets used/worn.
