He didn't bother to mention that simply having an open file doesn't mean payments are happening. The SSA doesn't care if it gets a death notice if the file isn't making active claims (IE likely died before retiring).

So the SSA has millions of files with a number, and some records, but no death notice. No payments are being made, so there's no need to clean up the database. Net result:

This shows the gradual effect of the switch from coal, and then the sharper reduction due to efficiency and renewables. It's inclusive of industrial generation and vehicles, which is why the number is higher than the one you listed.

That being said, total electricity use has dropped by ~1/3, which is pure efficiency work.

I'm not saying we're there yet, but grid scale storage is going exponential. Base load is a solvable problem.

CO2 production in the US is down more sharply. (Natural gas isn't ideal, but its better than coal).
