Great to (finally) see the @NHSEngland A&E Attendances and Emergency Admissions data set including a Paediatric Split!

Top 10 by attendances below.....

Will work on sharing other key findings soon

#RSV just taking its time this year.

Has the vaccine muted it's peak or just flattened the overall area under the curve....?

(note admission rates not too far away from following 2022-23 curve)

So Flu following slightly unusual pattern.

We'll start early it thinks, and then perhaps just relax for a bit, while we lull everyone into a false sense of security.

Trajectory of illness is important

An often impossible challenge in primary care as clinicians faced with a point in time decision, much easier when you have time to observe.

#RSV often plays by its own rules though...

Respiratory virus data this week.

#Flu: A slight deviation from its previous trajectory - probably within bounds of normal variation

#RSV: showing a steady climb and increase in admissions (some unpublished data showing reduced rates in under 1s)

Really interesting that there is a much reduced ED presentation and admission effect.

However Emergency Departments are still as full as ever so winter still looking to be a challenging one.

While RSV still feels a little muted.

Is this because flu has been competition?

The vaccine is showing signs of impact?

Or does it have some nasty trick up its sleeve...?
November 8, 2025 at 1:33 AM
Sorry I was late this week....

So Flu continues its early rise

There is hope though.

Graph of admissions for RSV is definitely showing a different trend - and this looks to hold for < 5s and >75s

Will be interesting to see what November brings for Children's Emergency Departments...

RSV following a typical trajectory - will we see any impact from the RSV vaccination programme?

There is certainly impact in patients over 60 (vaccination rates 60-65%)

www.gov.uk/government/p...

....less so for infants (with rates at 53%)

Interesting trends starting to emerge.

In Emergency Care why does winter feel like it has come early?

Because it has - Flu earlier than normal.

Get vaccinated if you are eligible.

And thanks to @ukhsa.bsky.social
can now directly compare the admission rates for RSV between infants and older persons.

Will be useful to see what trends emerge given differences in vaccination rates between the two groups....

And so it begins...

Flu and RSV seasons have begun.

The impact of winter often determined but how incidence plays out.

Both now have vaccination programmes. Have we done enough to reduce predictable surges?

Thanks to @ukhsa.bsky.social we can monitor impact of RSV (the virus which causes bronchiolitis)

We started vaccinating pregnant mothers last year but didn't see much of an impact.

Let's hope with⬆️immunisation rates things are different this year...

Brilliant example of how data can, and should, be available.

Variation in children (0-9) prescribed antibiotics in the last year in primary care

Difficult to explain this degree of variation away...

I think we already know that just putting National PEWS into the back of ambulance won't be effective...

...so what are the key tenants of recognising deterioration and what is "deterioration" in an pre-hospital context?

Help my #PhD student answer these questions!

Also a novel methodology of trial design for antibiotic treatment.

A 'Durations' approach

Multiple durations some knowingly much shorter and much longer that thought needed to determine the optimum duration.

And now Charlotte Durand on e-scooters

Audit from Alderhey demonstrated a clear signal for the incidence of Major Trauma from e-scooters.

Helmet wearing (or lack of) was an issue

**Private e-Scooters are illegal**

Tom shows this slide.

And then says - "don't believe this - it's a lie"

UTI is probably 3-4% in febrile infants

Concern about UTI is common but actual UTI isn't
