X is it's own story and a very different game in general. But it's still good. It's more 'mission' based and about exploring than the sort of anime-plot of the mainline.

The mainline Xeno games are also great, but I mean that is a much bigger time commitment.

You might want to play Legend of Legacy before Alliance Alive. Alliance Alive builds on a lot of the systems from Legend of Legacy which can make LoL harder to play if you play it second.

I think it depends on the system. If you're playing on a game boy most likely your gaze is already tilted down, so you instinctively look down for additional information. If you were playing on a television, you're looking slightly up, therefore it's better for information to be at the top.
