I can't help but look at some of these cringe-y playlists.

My friends left UCR for greener pastures and they stayed with us their last night in town. One thing (among many things!) they left with us was sourdough starter. Today I made my first-ever sourdough bread. It’s hard work and it made me miss them more. But at least I have bread. 😭💕🍞

So thrilled for Debanhi Rojas Figueroa, who I was lucky to have as a student and then joined my lab. She's going to spread her wings and start her PhD at UC Santa Barbara next year. www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/uc-clas...

Happy birthday to joão—a great friend and perfect excuse for cheese/cake.

Glad to host my lab for an end-of-quarter dinner to celebrate all of our wins. One undergrad got into a PhD program. Another accepted a full ride to an MPP program. Another was selected for an REU. A grad student won a dissertation fellowship & successfully defended his prospectus. So proud of them!

Photos from today’s red card making social event hosted by @ucrpolisci.bsky.social. Grateful to the students and especially @minhye.bsky.social for helping. Happy to share details with anyone who wants to do this with students, staff, and faculty at their institutions!

🇨🇳🌍New in @goodauth.bsky.social is a piece by Ann & Johannes Karreth examining the gender gap in Africans' attitudes toward China. They analyze 3 rounds of Afrobarometer data and create some neat dataviz (see below!). The piece summarizes findings from a recent @politicsgenderj.bsky.social article.

Today’s rainy weather coincides with crop box pickup. So please share any winter vegetable soup suggestions (we also eat meat—in case that matters).

My lab had its first (virtual) meeting of the quarter last week and while I'm generally overwhelmed with the work I have right now and annoyed/frustrated with the parts of my job that involve bureaucratic red tape, working with enthusiastic young people interested in research is truly a gift.

A morning walk up “coyote canyon” with the kids, then homemade pasta al limone for lunch, then I taught myself a new crochet technique to get halfway through a baby blanket, and then a neighborhood walk with the love of my life—all before the sun goes down. Hope you also had a good start for 2025.

I was so surprised when someone told me they preferred I kept my shoes on. I was also uncomfortable the whole visit because I'm not used to wearing shoes in the house. I recently came across this map and while it's likely made up, maybe there's some grain of truth?
