Due to the weather, we did not yet manage to make it to our research area. Hopefully the weather is with us tomorrow!

Some early snowfall in the Netherlands these days!

Unfortunately, the average number of days with a snow cover has declined dramatically over the last decades. ❄️📉

- packing and shipping all our gear and dealing with the paperwork that comes with it.
- receiving the required safety trainings, as well as certificates for droning, first-aid, and more.

Preparations for this project have been going on for months:
- fitness and medical examinations to make sure we are mentally and physically fit enough to go to the Antarctic.
- building and testing weather stations.

In less than 2 weeks I will be departing to the Antarctic! I will spend a month at the Mario Zucchelli Station🇮🇹, the base for our field work on the Nansen Ice Shelf.

Both EC and AIFS are hinting to colder weather in Northern Europe next week.

Helsinki will see frosty nights. There's a small chance for the first frosty days, too.

The answer: mitigation. Depending on what we do in the next decades, we can still reduce risks.

If we dramatically reduce GHG emissions, we can slow and decrease the amount of weakening, buy time for adaptation, and potentially still avoid an AMOC collapse.

Consequences of collapse are potentially devastating, with winters in Northern Europe becoming significantly colder.

Other potential effects: more active storm track in NW-Europe, less precipitation & rapid increase in local sea level.

Current systems & infrastructure not ready for such changes.

Lectures on AMOC and consequences of collapse by experts like René van Westen,
@rahmstorf.bsky.social, @swinda.bsky.social, @helmiraisanen.bsky.social.

Main conclusions: AMOC weakening is observed, further weakening virtually certain. Pace of weakening, and if/when AMOC collapses remain uncertain.

Great, intense conference during the Nordic Tipping Week in Helsinki and Rovaniemi 🇫🇮 last week.

Climate scientists, fisheries experts, social researchers, and policy makers came together to discuss what an #AMOC weakening or collapse could mean for the Nordic region and the rest of the world.

Northern lights were briefly but strongly visible from Helsinki - even with the bare eye.

More from this frosty morning 👇🏼

It's also the first frost of the fall in the city centre of Helsinki (Kaisaniemi). Timing of this season's first frost is relatively typical.

A very cold morning for the time of year in the outskirts of Helsinki!

Cold morning in Helsinki, with Malmi weather station measuring -3.6°C.

Parts of Northern Norway and Finnish Lapland will see the first snow of this autumn in the upcoming days.

Cold, northwesterly flow over relatively warm sea surfaces leads to the formation of these showers.

Last week, Longyearbyen (Svalbard) recorded its highest October temperature on record: 10.2°C, just above the 10.1°C set in 2016. 🌡️

Now, just days later, winter has finally taken over❄️ - but the temperatures remain on the mild side for this time of year.

And that’s not counting the medium-power or Tesla super chargers.

EV driving well beyond the Arctic Circle is absolutely feasible.🌲🚘

Yesterday we drove this loop through some of the most remote parts of Finnish & Norwegian Lapland, yet EV charging wasn’t a problem at all. 🔋

High-power chargers ⚡️:
• Inari 🇫🇮 – 2× 300 kW
• Kople & Tana 🇳🇴 – 175 kW
• Utsjoki 🇫🇮 – 4× 200 kW

Timing of the first frost is relatively typical, maybe slightly early in the current climate.

first frost of the autumn in northern Helsinki today.

The summer as a whole was the 4th warmest on record. Note how the top 4 warmest years all occurred during the last 4 years.
September 1, 2025 at 7:49 AM
Another extremely warm August on Svalbard. If it looks tame, that's only because last year obliterated the records.
