I hope you followed for obscure college football (#d3fb /
@d3football) and even more obscure hip-hop and not b/c I edit for
The Athletic. Work posts rare.
One of my #d3fb nerd pet peeves is when a home broadcast team makes a grand proclamation that someone is the best coach/player/whatever in Division III.

You’ve seen 12 of the 241 teams. You have no idea.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but nobody in Virginia or North Carolina calls it the O-D-A-C.

Oh-dack forever. #d3fb

Mount Union 2021: Needs overtime to beat Muhlenberg, 35-29.

Mount Union 2025: Up 35-0 on Muhlenberg at halftime.

In case you were unsure whether the Purple Raiders were back-back. #d3fb

It’d take a Hardin-Simmons upset of a Mount Union team that might be Canton-bound, but my preseason 20 Questions semifinal picks for @d3football are all in position.

Two of the other pick combos could happen, and a fourth is prevented only by the #d3fb bracket:

Snap reactions from the #d3fb bracket reveal:
- Springfield at Cortland a rematch of last year's mild upset. R-MC at JCU a rematch of the Yellow Jackets' playoff upset in 2018.

- SCIAC champ at NWC champ, 2 Texas teams playing their first game against each other for billionth straight year. (more)

The MIAA has two #d3fb playoff participants in the same season for the first time in the post-1999 automatic bid era.

That 29-26 overtime-win-that-wasn't by Alma vs. Hope on Sept. 26 has wide-ranging implications: Both teams are in the field, but 8-2 Alma isn't w/out that win.

The WIAC becomes the first #d3fb conference to place four teams in the playoffs in a season. Prior to last season's expansion of the field to 40, only the Empire 8 in 2007 and the WIAC in 2016 had ever placed so many as 3 teams, at least during the automatic-bid era post-1999.

Some #d3fb thoughts after the d3football Week 2 top 25 is published:

- Hard to believe, after NCC undressed Oshkosh, which undressed Linfield, that there are voters, plural, who do not have them ranked No. 1. Preseason QB questions were valid, but after yesterday …

R-MC takes over down 7-0 with 7:28 left. Has missed two FGs, dropped a TD in the end zone, and threw a pick in the end zone.

Central has missed one FG, dropped a TD in the end zone, and threw a pick in the end zone.

Both defenses keeping their teams in it. #d3fb

Macon threw an end-zone INT, and Central led 7-0 at half.

The Dutch start the second half with a 4th & 1 missed 31-yard field goal attempt and a tipped-pass INT.

Classic game where the trailing team hangs around and hangs around and pretty soon isn’t trailing anymore. #d3fb

Randolph-Macon and Central giving each other the kind of game you look for when you schedule a non-conference clash halfway across the country against another potential conference champ.

Dutch throwing the ball well but Yellow Jackets have an end-zone INT. 0-0 9:15 2nd. #d3fb

This might be the best Week 2 #d3fb slate I've ever seen.

Four clashes of ranked teams:

No. 16 UW-Oshkosh at No. 1 North Central

No. 2 Mount Union at No. 15 Grove City

No. 20 John Carroll at No. 3 Johns Hopkins

No. 9 UW-La Crosse at No. 17 Carnegie Mellon

Plus there are …

I rearrange a lot between preseason and Week 1 @d3football.bsky.social polls.

-Voted for 7 new teams this week; dropped 2 whose wins were less impressive than others.

-Voted for 4 WIAC teams, up from 2 in the preseason. None are Whitewater.

-Voted for 2 ODAC teams for first time in years. #d3fb

Wondering whether any #d3fb players will get drafted this weekend? Seems unlikely.

@danebrugler.bsky.social mentions 59 D-III players in The Beast, but none have a draftable grade.

@fduffy.bsky.social profiled 230 players for ALLCITY Network, and just one, Middlebury iOL Thomas Perry, is D-III.

The brains behind this weekend’s NFL final four:

#d3fb - Eagles HC Nick Sirianni (Mount Union); Commanders HC Dan Quinn (Salisbury State); Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo (Springfield).

#d2fb - Eagles DC Vic Fangio (East Stroudsburg)

Both #StaggBowl participants have four seniors and a junior starting along their offensive lines, and two senior tight ends as well. This is a great game to watch from the lines out instead of follow-the-ball style.

Here’s how both lines performed in the #d3fb playoffs:

the buccaneers are one team i would not want to play in the postseason. i'm not in football shape, i don't have anywhere near the skill set that would be necessary, i don't belong to a team, and i would have to play them by myself. under no circumstances would i be interested in that matchup

Here's then-Trinity-coach Chuck Priore on the NESCAC skipping playoffs, in a 2005 column I wrote for @d3football:
“We can finish on a winning note. In the playoffs, only one team can do that. In ‘89, when I was at Union, we were 13-0 and lost to Dayton in the Stagg Bowl. I felt like we were 1-13.”

The Division III football gods let the fun travel to Susquehanna, Salisbury & Johns Hopkins for the quarterfinals, but all is back to normal for the semifinals.

The games are in Naperville & Alliance, and if I have to append states and school names to those, you must be new to #d3fb.

Johns Hopkins will travel to Alliance for a semifinal, which is the site and scenario of program architect Jim Margraff’s last game.

Margraff died of a heart attack in his sleep on 1/2/19, less than a month after the Blue Jays came up just short in a 28-20 semifinal loss in Alliance on 12/8/18.
