The VDOT project "Route 29 Solutions" (www.vdot.virginia.gov/projects/cul...) spent $117 million to widen 29 and "reduce congestion". But then people can't cross so they have to spend $24mil more to build this bridge. What a grift.

After a family was hit (and an infant died) crossing Stony Point Rd last year, I checked the map. There is NO legal way to cross from the Apt complexes on the east side to the stores on the west side. No crosswalks, no continuous sidewalks. 45mph speed limit. But people blamed the mother.

It's ironic because almost all road policy is to move cars faster except for signalized intersections which are so often the bottleneck on traffic flow and speed.

Temps will be about 10 degrees higher tonight than they were on Thursday into Friday. And the sun thats out now will warm the ground/concrete a lot. That will greatly delay any accumulation. Also going to be above freezing when the precip comes in morning. Rain first will neutralize a lot of snow.

Didn't know this story, what an own goal. Would have love to see the bonkers house they built in there.

Even at the hilariously low $ value of the current ticket, Cville could raise a good bit of money from aggressively policing the bike lanes just on west main.

🤢 My kingdom for a PDF

There are also regulatory categories for "Low Speed Vehicles", essentially Golf Carts, that are popular in vacation areas. The whole thing is just so over complicated and only serves the interests of incumbent Auto makers. Not even considering our terrible tariffs on cars and trucks.

$100,000 for a Threat & Risk Assessment, then whatever the cost of this new work will be just to let a few people save a minute or two crossing the city. Yeesh.
December 4, 2025 at 7:29 PM
What a waste of money. Stop cars from going over them and the pavers will last decades.
December 4, 2025 at 7:11 PM
Oof somebody took hit on this. Surprised it didn't go for 815 over the summer. Guess being so close to 250 is just a dealbreaker for most people.

The quote from Hailey Strickler about being embarrassed by her diagnosis and using extra time is a more important problem to solve for than a few kids getting extra time that someone thinks they don't deserve.
December 3, 2025 at 5:24 PM
Yep. The quote from Hailey Strickler saying she felt shame for using the accommodation she qualified for is a bigger issue than a couple people getting extra time they don't need.

Exactly. And almost all systems have programs to provide free or reduced fares for groups that may not be able to afford the fare, so price sensitive users are already accounted for. If the system doesn't run where I need it to, it doesn't matter what the cost is.

Michelle Obama is clearly a public figure. The bar for a defamation action is much higher for her. And nothing in this article rises to defamation especially has trump is just resharing what someone else has said and not making a factual claim himself.

What controlled environment? They are driving the same roads that humans are. The humans that are killing hundreds of people a year in the same environment.

And thats basically what the TA said in this case. "I don't agree with you, but that doesn't matter because this essay sucks".

Really bad showing by the Big East

When you scratch the surface of so many of these conservative stunts, they are so clearly calculated performative culture war bullshit. There are like a couple thousand MAGAs that seem to just get recycled over and over for all the ratfucking.

A painted bike lane is almost always just a gutter and I think we should call them that.

Are he and George RR Martin in some kind of literary tontine where the "winner" has to finish the last book in their series?
November 27, 2025 at 5:59 PM
yeah could have the same issue Halligan has unless the judges reappointed.

I agree that the blame is on the infrastructure owner/regulator/etc, but I am still not sure the examples you have are due to growing populations or greater density. Flint's population is half what it was in 1930. Lack of maintenance of current systems is a different issue.
November 25, 2025 at 3:09 PM
Have there been any modern instances of systematic failure of water/sewer/gas/electricity infrastructure in a US city because of increased density or population growth? I can't think of any, but it's not something I have researched.
November 25, 2025 at 12:52 AM
Sounds like it worked exactly as the city wanted it to
