We believe these analysis tools can be a very useful complement to the simulation-based approach. We also recommend that future model builders try to start with a more comprehensive understanding of smaller models and build on it afterwards.

Following this workflow, we can see what exact characteristics of the dynamic functions lead to certain overall behavior of the system. We also showed that as long as these core characteristics are preserved, we can change the function forms and produce similar results.

We started with two variables, analyzed their dynamics and the influence of various parameters. After that, we also showed how to add more variables and parameters into the analysis step by step.

We used two formal dynamic models, the panic disorder model by Robinaugh et al. and the suicidal ideation model by Wang (@shirleybwang.bsky.social) et al. to show how to use these tools to understand why a dynamic system evolves in a certain way, resulting in interesting phenomena.

In this tutorial, we introduced an R package with a GUI that can perform phase plane analysis and bifurcation analysis for formal dynamic models in psychology.
