Cthulhu Reborn is a small independent publisher of horror roleplaying books based around the horrors, gods, and bad vibes created by H.P. Lovecraft and friends.

About this time last year we released a couple of double- scenario books in Tête-bêche (our first experiments with the format).

Creative opportunities aside, it's a neat alternative for a publisher that already has two great colour covers for individual scenarios and doesn't want to lose either.

Oh you mean like THIS (👇👇👇👇) which will be up on our DTRPG page in a week or so?

For once this is something I am GLAD to take the blame for.

If you hear someone either utter the phrase "No Wukkas" or mention ANYTHING about a sumptuous Chinese meal ... run. You have reached the Aussie Vernacular 'Pocalypse.

Yes ... and in the early 2000s we had annoying pop-up assistants in Microsoft Office that kept asking if you were writing a letter and autogenerating garbage content that everybody hated.

Oh no, wait, we have that in the 2020s again.

I guess history really does go in cycles. The annoying bits.

This PDF contains a cut-down version of the Eldritch Horizon rules (based on the Cthulhu Eternal Future SRD), six pre-gens, and a lengthy adventure ... all for the special price of ... free.

There will be a softcover POD version of this Quickstart released in December, but for now it is just PDF.

Next year we have plans to release a full-featured near-future Sci-Fi game called "Eldritch Horizon", set among cold ice at the edge of our solar system. But as a thank you to everyone we have brought forward the release of its freebie 72-page Quickstart: www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/5...

The Usurpers is a modern-day adventure set in Arkham (perhaps an unused part for the long-OOP "Arkham Now"). Features lot of poking around in steam tunnels. Only after converting it did someone point out that its plot takes inspiration from a tale by t.e.d. klein

Second Coming is a hefty 1920s scenario set in New Orleans. Sets up as being a sequel of sorts to events described by HPL in "The Call of Cthulhu", namely the peculiar goings-on interrupted by Inspector Legrasse. Also the weird Cthulhu Idol he retrieved.

By chance we found out a few years back that Gary had written 4 scenarios for CoC that never got released, so we contacted him and asked if we could convert them to Cthulhu Eternal. We were delighted when he said yes. So far we've only released two of those, both included in the current bundle.

Chaosium even released a book solely collecting four of Gary's adventures (In The Shadows), an anthology that we though was so cool yet out-of-print that we created a free PDF of upgrade notes to recent rules and all new handouts (botched in the original). www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/1...

Another great writer from CoC's golden-era (the mid-to-late 1990s) is Gary Sumpter. Involved with many of the classic books of that time (The Stars Are Right!, Ramsay Campbell's Goatswood, etc).

I've written before about how thrilled we've been to work with Kevin A. Ross, perhaps the greatest living Call of Cthulhu writer. This bundle includes 3 of his earliest writings for games, written prior to his first published scenario in 1990.
But Kevin isn't the only Great Old One we've published.

We went all out with illustrating this book and also wrote a small additional section on Unnatural Places invented by Lovecraft. We think it's the most "purist" depiction of HPL's mythos, since it eschews all details not explicitly mentioned in one of his tales. It's less "gamey" than many versions.

The SRD is extensive (40 Mythos Entities, 20+ rituals, and a bunch of cults, artifacts, and tomes) ... but is just text. People kept asking for an illustrated version to serve as a kind of "Monster Manual" and Grimoire book to go with their Cthulhu Eternal core books. And thus was born HPL's BoYS.

When we released our own open game some years later, we had this resource translated into English ... becoming our Open Cthulhu Mythos SRD. It's an invaluable free resource for anyone who wants to build Cthulhu game material free from IP that may be contested.

I wasn't the only person fascinated by this discussion: the German Lovecraft Association (who produce a German-language game called FHTAGN, amongst other stuff) took it upon themselves to exhaustively map out exactly what elements are 100% Lovecraft (and thus Public Domain) in name and depiction.
November 10, 2025 at 7:22 AM
The essence of the debate seemed to revolve around the divide between which elements of the gaming version of the Cthulhu Mythos were pure Lovecraft inventions, which were wholesale inventions of game publishers, & which were embellishments by gamer companies of vague hints made in Lovecraft tales.

Although I had no relationship with the individual who released the open rules, I was fascinated by the reasons that were given about why such a thing would be illegal. I blogged about it, including here: cthulhureborn.wordpress.com/2019/06/29/t...

Things kicked off when a previous (crude) attempt was made by someone to build an open Cthulhu-themed RPG; something that triggered a degree of public angst and legal threats from one of the bigger game publishers. It was heated enough that the company PR guy was permabanned from one of the forums.
