PS3 would have had good pickup and response by then, and feels like "in all the top supercomputers" would be meaningful?
Feels like an odd blank spot. Can't imagine they went in with "unless the PS3 sells better than the PS2 this will fail..."

There's where I'm curious. IBM stopped development in late 2009, which was before Cell supercomputers were overtaken, and four years before the PS4 dropped. Did it just not have ENOUGH adoption? Did they note a flaw that would be exposed pushing it further, causing its cancellation for the PS4?

The CELL used to lead a lot of top supercomputers as well, but eventually got knocked out. Though unsure what the causality was for that. Possible the supercomputer losses made them bail on continuing for consoles, or possible the console retreat knocked out further dev for supercomputers. ah well

Considering the development cycle I guess the issues that started the PS3 made them get cold feet before everyone "got gud" at it, so they were already committed to the change.
It worked out fine for them, of course, but felt like they were wasting a whole lot of interesting custom chip development

I am STILL shocked that they didn't continue the architecture into the PS4 era, as the whole point was that it would basically scale infinitely and be completely modular and have a ton of savings down the line, and by the end of the PS3 era everyone had _finally_ gotten used to it, and

Not even sure how much they were bothering to pretend. The Ellison machinations were obvious from the start, and Weiss has been nothing but a propagandist since she acheived any public notoriety.
And yet even with all that I’m STILL kinda shocked how far and fast the fall.

The only work I can think of where multiple adaptations exist and are better than the source, and the Hollywood adaptation is actually the best.
But yeah, this part was stupid, and should have steered closer to source. Classic wimping out, HWood terrified of a mixed/sad ending.

Amusingly my BBS days got me to typing only with thumb, index, and ring fingers while staring at the keyboard, but I could still 40WPS that way😝
