I also recommend digging through the YYG Archive which compiles TONS of ancient Game Maker games; some are pretty spiffy, like "Dragon Ball Budokai X", a flying fighting game. It's no Psychic Force but it's fun; check out this amazing video I just found holy shit

In Argentina, a PC gaming magazine called "Total Games" released an original bootleg DBZ fighting game called "The Big Tournament" through including discs in each issue. Each disc added more characters and features, so it was kinda episodic; but it was never completed.

Right, scene's a better word. I meant the use of the word community as in the most abstract literal, I guess utopian meaning of the word; not as in "fandom" or whatever. I think "community" is important in the indie space; the indie space is at its best when it's like the doujin scene.

I can't fathom making any videogame without knowledge of legacy or history or anything like that; especially genre games which I'd consider quintessential "otaku media"!! You're basically talking to a wall and pretending like you're saying something while final fight's in a different room.

I read an essay about "otaku media" like mecha anime, where they share similar cliches and tropes but constantly iterate or spin them in new ways because they're constantly "in conversation" with the past; each new mecha anime is not just made for "the audience", but as responses to other creators.

This is why community is so important, to me. It's not even a matter of "audience" or "demographic" but just, if you make a genre game, it should be because you love the genre, and thus you should try to as much as possible understand the genre, talk to other devs, get recommendations, etc.

Gigabots (2009)

A 9-episode youtube webseries with a shocking amount of production value for the era; this series oozes with such an intense sincere love for super robot media, tokusatsu, and art in general. Really charming, really funny, and really special. The episodes are five minutes, watch em!
