The city of Palm Springs spent nearly $300,000 to digitize archives of The Desert Sun from 1934 to 1993. Jeannie Kays, the director of library services for the city of Palm Springs, is worried about the future of the California Digital Newspaper Collection. “I’m not the only small archive that joined in on this project,” Kays said. “That’s how we all were able to make this work. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has embarked on an international programme to use nuclear energy in rice cultivation research. Jointly with the FOOD and AGRICULTURE ORGANISATION of the UNITED NATIONS (FAO), IAEA is promoting rice tests carried out by Hungarian scientists at Szarvas (Hungary). (Credit IAEA) Scientist at the Donner Laboratory, Berkeley, California, using this specially designed plastic helmet to collect air expired by a person, are obtaining a better understanding of the bodies metabolic processes. The study, involving the use of radioactive carbon tracers, has provided much valuable information about conditions such as diabetes, acromegaly, gout, anemia, and certain types of obesity. After a tracer dose of a specific carbon-14 labelled compound has been given to a person, a specially designed plastic helmet is placed over his head to collect all the expired air. The expired air is then monitored for levels of carbon-dioxide content and carbon-14 activity. In the healthy person, the carbon-14 compounds are oxidized (burned) in the body to carbon dioxide to give off a characteristic pattern. By studying and measuring deviations from this normal pattern, a better understanding of metabolic processes is obtained. Breath analyses, for example, have been used to differentiate between folic-acid deficiency and vitamin-B12 deficiency as a cause of one type of anemia.
