When I got her, Mystic was not very much of a lap cat. But when it got cold in December, she decided that sitting in someone's lap was totally fine. My water glass is almost empty and I can't reach my phone. Halp.

TIL: restic, when restoring from backup, does not change the mtime or ownership or permissions of files until the very end. When a restore takes 96 minutes and everything is still owned by root and was last modified recently, 99% of the way through, it's a bit nerve-wracking. Also it backs up in

TIL: My backup disk is USB3, not USB2, and I had it plugged into a 2 port. Looks like 120M/second read, so it should only take an hour or so to reformat /home as LUKS, then restore the most recent backup to the newly encrypted LV. Also backups now take about 1:35 where they took 2:30 before.

Poll: Chicken and dumplings, or Swedish Meatballs? I was leaning towards chicken and dumplings, but you can Change My Mind! (Marie Callendar frozen meals were 4/$10 last week, I stocked up, the Swedish Meatballs are kind of a comfort food for me.)

Ramen for breakfast. You are not my supervisor, and I will not be taking questions at this time. At some point last year, I ate Flaming Hot Cheetos for breakfast, thanks to the grocery store having its power cut, but that condition is not true right now.

The years (few) we shared were like fog or a grass-blade compared to all the things you lived. And yet, the fog/grass keeps winding me back, driving me forward, drawing out thoughts, serving as inspiration.

Be someone's fog. Be someone's grass.

~/.cache/mozilla/firefox/(profile name)/quicksuggest-amp.sql was 1.1 G. xz-ing it reduced it to 94M, meaning it's pretty redundant. I closed firefox, xzed the file, re-opened firefox, and so far everything is exactly the same. What's weird is that there's almost nothing there when you search on

I don't think it's possible with current technology, but moving the moon a few hundred km closer to Earth would be both a great tech demo and a serious boon to people who like eclipses as there'd be fewer annulars and more totals.

We held gold dust in our hands (2010-2013). Not for that long, or that securely, but it was fun nontheless and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

youtu.be/yXNlNvZwBUw?... should get you to where Red Letter Media talks about "Project Metalbeast", a bad horror movie about a werewolf. 25 years ago, I watched "Metalbeast 2", which a friend had rented for some reason. It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad enough to be funny. Also there's very

www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCG2... I rented this in 1991. It was BAD, but it was consistent in its badness? There was apparently a mechanic where you could use a blue W (bad) in combination with a red W (good) to go directly to Super Wolf. I never figured that out, but I only rented it for 2 days.

I've been away from the internet for 2 weeks. Funny how a 12-year old cable modem can just fall over and die from a 9-hour power outage. I spent a lot of offline time reading. The Space Merchants (CM Kornbluth and Frederik Pohl, 1953) was difficult to get through for a couple of reasons, one of

These two were self-contained sci-fi tales in 1983. 252 had an unusual layout. 253 had more pathos than average for the time as the FF couldn't actually help the aliens they found.

I think a really cost-effective anti-heroin program would be to have a bunch of high school students read Naked Lunch. Burroughs told the truth about heroin, teenagers have pretty good bullshit detectors, and the book makes heroin look super un-sexy.

My 3rd grade music class learned this song in German:

Da var ein Bauer mit einem Hund
Unt Bingo var zein namen
B I N G O (repeat 2x, clap for N-1 letters)
Unt Bingo var zein namen.

...human memory is seriously weird, and probably encoded lossily, sort of like a JPEG on quality 70ish.

I can't even tell whether this tweet is supposed to be a parody or not. Sadly, the people at the top of this administration are universally some of the most corrupt, stupid, self-serving, venal, illiterate, drunk, and brain-damaged caricatures of humanity that I have ever seen.

I had a spicy mutton burger at a new place called King and Cardinal that recently opened. This was not really a burger, more like cooked shredded mutton on a bun with spicy sauce and crunchy vegetables. It was delicious though, 9/10 would order again. kingandcardinaltempe.com

Kroger store brand pepperoncini are $0.21 per ounce. Mezzetta pepperoncini are $0.31 per ounce. Both taste about the same, I think, so Kroger has found another customer. Storage shouldn't change the taste since they're in the fridge in a sealed jar with their pickling vinegar.
