This stands out in an already maddening article. Gosh, are there any disciplines - perhaps ones that we’ve spent decades gutting because they encourage these very habits - that could effectively prepare students for this apparent Value(s?) Migration?

The real value is migrating from information transfer to judgment development, from transactional learning to transformational learning. In an AI saturated world, premium skills are distinctly human: verification of sources, contextual decision-making, ethical reasoning under ambiguity, and accountability for real-world outcomes.

Thanks for bringing in a historical example. As you might know I am a premodern historian - my people lobbied against the horse-and-carriage industry (J Hunt, 'Carriages, Violence and Masculinity in Early Modern Rome', 2014).

This seems true of the entire sector. While I’m not generally a fan of Great Books curricula, the model of discussion-based humanities education - even as tutorials alongside lectures - is in high demand from students. Hated by admin and Boards.

An unpleasant truth has emerged in Tulsa over the years. It’s not that traditional liberal learning is out of step with student demand. Instead, it’s out of step with the priorities, values and desires of a powerful board of trustees with no apparent commitment to liberal education, and an administrative class that won’t fight for the liberal arts even when it attracts both students and major financial gifts. The tragedy of the contemporary academy is that even when traditional liberal learning clearly wins with students and donors, it loses with those in power.

Oxford has some nice libraries sure but it is ridiculous to think there is a more beautiful library than Robarts in Toronto.

A full frontal view of the jewel of North American University Brutalism, John P Robarts Library at the University of Toronto. Described variously as ‘the peacock’, ‘Fort book’, or ‘what the hell is that thing on the front for?’, it houses much of NA’s 3rd-largest library collection. It looms large in U of T myth and legend.
