I also had a hard time watching Urusei Yatsura. I only got through one episode of it and ended up reading the manga instead.
Ranma ½, while still leaning into tropes, has much more likable characters and a better romance. 100% recommend Ranma ½ while I couldn't do the same with Urusei Yatusra.
