Funders can drive change. Authors can't. Authors are producers, not consumers. Producers don't decide demand, consumers do. Funders and research institutes must demand change of their authors, or withhold their funds. It's that simple. Funders have all the cards.

That's why funders hold the power here. Funders can decide to pay for services or not. They can decide to support authors who publish in for-profit journals, or not. They can decide to pay APCs in for-profit journals, or not.

I think figure making has been free through Inkscape. For me, Affinity was mostly about the convenience of the slick GUI, for which they charged a reasonable price. Now worried it will go down the typical enshittification route. Would love to be positively surprised.

Recently thought about upgrading to V2, now a bit confused about V3. What is the business model here? Free as in I pay with my data (is it cloud-based?), as in I get ads, or really free in the hope I pay for premium to get AI tools?
