My mom's proudest parenting moment was having me convinced until kindergarten that these crackers were in fact "cookies". She still curses the child who showed me my first chocolate chip cookie 😂

Same over here, that's what we've been dealing with all week minus a bit of respite today 🥵

Outlook for next week not looking any better 🫠

Brython put in a very solid performance in terms of field position and progression, particularly in the first half.

Did a good job of pinning Edinburgh in their own half for most of the game.

Could be more efficient in the red zone though!

So what does this all mean for #EdinburghRugby?

Clearly, they are a talented team capable of producing great performances on both sides of the ball. They have put in strong, if not dominant performances on numerous occasions but seem to struggle to maintain these levels across entire games.

#EdinburghRugby also average nearly two fewer Red Zone Attacks per game and capitalize on 11% less of those opportunities than their opposition.

A combination of kicking errors, charged kicks, handling errors from forced play/playing into trouble, and losing kickoffs after scoring points have all contributed to their struggles in their own half.

#EdinburghRugby have gifted their opposition too many dangerous attacking opportunities.

The other area where #EdinburghRugby have struggled is in their exit success rate in their own half.

As we can see, a higher proportion of their attacks take place in their own half compared to their opposition, and they have struggled to exit from their defensive 22m.

For me, one of the key metrics for success is field position and progression.

When #EdinburghRugby have won, they had better average field position and made more metres per possession than their opposition. The exception is in Round 5, when they couldn't capitalize on their opportunities.

The most recent example of these #EdinburghRugby defensive issues is from the game just gone against #BrythonThunder in Rd 7, where they scored to take a 32-26 lead in the 75th minute but went on to concede two tries in 5 minutes and ultimately lost the match.

Attacking inconsistency aside, more worrying is the upward trend in opposition attacking efficiency being allowed by #EdinburghRugby , possibly pointing to some defensive frailties and/or inefficiencies.

#EdinburghRugby 's two wins came in the first two rounds where they were the more dominant team, but have since struggled to reach the same levels.

Round 5 vs #GwaliaLightning was a close fought match where both teams cancelled each other out for large parts of the game.

#EdinburghRugby have been inconsistent with their attacking output this season but scored their highest 'attacking effectiveness' score of the campaign over the weekend against #BrythonThunder despite losing the game.

Caveat: this scoring system is still a work in progress and is being tweaked!

As a preview to this weekend's Scottish derby in #CelticChallenge let's first have a look at some of #EdinburghRugby 's key performance stats and metrics across previous rounds.

Currently sitting in 4th place on 14pts with 2 wins, Edinburgh aren't seeing the same success they had last season.

And how does that compare to the rematch in Round 6 this past weekend?

Looking at #EdinburghRugby vs #GwaliaLightning in Round 5 of the #CelticChallenge, what trends do you notice?

To complement that graph, I've put together this one showing the number of attacks (at least one phase) a team had in each pitch zone accompanied by their Exit Success Rate %.

In other words, a sort of pitch occupation map, and how successful each team was at exiting from one zone to another.

New graphic alert!

Previous posts included this graph representing the average start and end points of possessions.

Further left = closer to the defensive try line.
Further right = closer to the offensive try line.

Longer lines = more territory gained.
Shorter lines - less territory gained.

#EdinburghRugby could have won the game on their missed conversions alone, only managing 1/5 to #GwaliaLightning 's 3/4.

While it may be unfair to pin the game on goal kickers alone, especially as many of the conversions were quite difficult attempts from the touchline, this will be an area...

So where did it go wrong?

Well for one, #GwaliaLightning were ruthless with their Red Zone opportunities.

#EdinburghRugby couldn't capitalize on any of their first half Red Zone opportunities, getting held up or losing possession.
