Boy, am I glad I graduated from university before AI. Having to subject yourself to absurd panopticon nonsense to prove your writing skills are the result of, you know, competence and academic skill, rather than cheating, is unbelievably bleak.

This technology is ruining lives.

AI chews up the past and spits it out, and we call the resultant gobs of masticated trash “the future”. There is no novelty in this paradigm. A machine cannot experiment, it cannot try new things. It can only repeat, only duplicate what has come before. As a result, it is as though history itself has come to a shuddering halt. The future has been indefinitely postponed. All we have is a present that seems trapped in a feedback loop, a mishmash of yesterday’s news refracted and refracted again until it becomes nothing but meaningless noise. AI has turned the present into a hall of mirrors. As a consequence of its destructive effect on knowledge, on meaning-making, on language itself, it substitutes reality with a model. The map replaces the territory. This model creates its own narrative of history, assuring us that we are moving towards some nebulous technological liberation. It papers over the realities of the climate crisis, and of ascendant fascism around the world. It serves power. It serves death. It serves apocalypse.
