On the young black walnut tree throwing out leaves this spring, we have a hooded oriole in the center (black and orange - the black is pronounced on it's throat and wings), a scaly-breasted munia in the upper center right of the picture (you can see the white and brown on the breast making the scale markings, the rest of the bird is brown). In the upper corner you can barely make out the lesser goldfinch (yellow breast and black wings are the only things that are visible).

My older daughter woke up, borrowed my camera, and began searching the feeders for visitors. First up are the black headed grosbeaks!

Female black headed grosbeak raiding the dark green suet feeder on the black bird feeder pole. A black bird feeder, a black and yellow nyger seed feeder, and a glass hummingbird bottle feeder can be seen. Shee is set off by the mint julep juniper bush and coyote bush behind her. The same female grosbeak, hanging upside down while digging the suet out from the feeder. Now, on the black glass birdseed feeder (almost empty), we can see both a male black headed grosbeak with the female black headed grosbeak behind him and on a separate feeder. On the same pole, you can see the nyjer feeder as well. It appears that a sparrow is trying to get on the black and yellow nyjer feeder. This time, only the male black headed grosbeak is sitting on the mostly empty black and glass feeder. His black head stands out against the black and yellow nyjer feeder.

It's been a while, and we've had some good luck - so some #bird pics from yesterday and today.

I woke up early yesterday (6 am) and ended up in the living room. I looked out the window, and found Mr. and Mrs. California Quail!

Mr. and Mrs. California Quail exploring our front yard. The male is on the center left, and the female is in the center and a little farther back from the male. To the right of them is a rather large white sage, trying to take over the yard. Some thistle plants (that need to be removed) are on the left and in the foreground. They are standing on brown bark mulch, an attempt to keep the weeds down (I need more mulch - 3" is best to keep the weeds down). Mr. and Mrs. California Quail exploring our front yard. This time, the female has move more toward the center left, while the male is on the center right, almost underneath the white sage.

Finally, we have a Hummingbird Sage! My youngest daughter found this two years ago when I was redoing the front yard in California Natives, and needed some extra plants. This has taken off in our front yard, and attracts bees and (you guessed it) hummingbirds!
