Bike racing fans (or mechanics), anyone really, visiting the Museum of Science in Cambridge should hop across the road to EF’s North American HQ lobby to look at fancy machines.

I was excited 🤤 to see EF Pro Racing’s launch bike from 2018 displayed in the lobby.

Also, for something convenient to inner-Greater Boston: Formaggio’s had a sidewalk set up the week before last.

This is mid-week lunchtime outside Kendall Sq., on Windsor at Hampshire St.
A BBQ grill set up in a public-right of-way too often used by cars as a loading zone, but now used for food service and parking a bike. On the sidewalk, people are waiting in line. Three other people are preparing the food. There are 10 people total, including the picture taker, but there are 6 more waiting behind them. A sandwich board sign on the sidewalk displays the menu in neatly scribed hand print, and is titled “Formaggio Kitchen”, BBQ. Prices are high. I did not eat the potato salad, and the collard greens were proper. There is a fire official out of frame directly behind the photographer. This is because of the flame within the 37 inch Weber Ranch Kettle grill. Also: peep the 20mph speed limit sign. Streets are for people.

My ANT cargo bike seems heavy but a simple 75 lb back rack, step through frame, and front basket with head-tube steering has kept me operational for 10+ years.

Stereotyped characterizations of black people were then common (with Mickey's design itself apparently evolved from blackface caricatures used in minstrel shows, down to the gloves).[3] One of many films and cartoons of its era that referenced Uncle Tom's Cabin, Mickey's Mellerdrammer features Mickey and others in explicit blackface.[4] Henry Louis Gates Jr. wondered how the cartoon evaded censorship of miscegenation, given that Mickey and Minnie portray Tom and Eva, and are "as they say, an item, and unmistakably so". Additionally, Mickey is seen cross-dressing in the role of Topsy.[5]

Visited the Martha Canfield Memorial Free Library in Arlington, VT.

The gallery has photos taken in 1909-1915 by local photographer William Hayden.

The reading room has prints of Norman Rockwell paintings, including “Freedom of Speech”, a depiction of a 1942 Town Meeting here.
William Hayden photographed the inside of Rob Shuffleton's barbershop in East Arlington. Look for the calendar on the wall ... it is dated July 1907. Look also for the picture of the U.S. President ... Theodore Roosevelt. You can see a blurry image of Hayden and his tripod in the mirror. Norman Rockwell took a picture of that same barbershop sometime in the 1940's. Working from that picture, he turned the vantage point 90 degrees, then invented the back room with its band of musicians. However, many unique features of the 1907 barbershop can be seen in Rockwell's painting. How many can you find? Cherry, the photographer’s dog. A print of Norman Rockwell’s, “Freedom of Speech” on the wall of Arlington, VT’s Canfield Library. It depicts one of Rockwell’s local neighbors, Jim Edgerton, at a 1942 Town Meeting, speaking as the only voice opposed to the construction of a new school. Drafting this text, the author of this post realized that he’s met Jim Edgerton, and he experienced him as rather arrogant, and entitled. Thinking of Deadwood, for some reason.
Franklyn Ajaye as Samuel Fields (N**** General) and Richard Gant as Arnette Hostetler in “Full Faith and Credit”, Episode 28 of the HBO Series “Deadwood” (2004). Deadwood was one of the few depictions of the expansion of the United States across North American as a violent, racist, and primal experience, especially for the existing Native communities, non-whites, women, children, and natural environment, as well as the strivers amongst the white settler community in due course. Set in the town of Deadwood in the Black Hills of Dakota Territory, the show had a diverse cast of actors delivering lines of delightfully explicit dialogue in a gritty setting with realistic costume design (which was rather new in the early aughts as well), and intricate character development based on real historical figures like Samuel Fields, an African-American resident of Deadwood in the late 1800s. He is depicted on the right by comedic actor Franklyn Ajaye in this image. Kool Moe Dee did not make an appearance in this series, unfortunately.

Dear Readers, When I first proposed writing about the Boston molasses flood in the I Survived series, my editors weren't so sure about the topic. My other books are about major historical events like the American Revolution, Hurricane Katrina, D-Day, and 9/11. A flood of molasses in Boston? Really? But as l hope you now agree, the molasses flood wasn't just a strange and sticky accident. It was a tragic event that impacted thousands of people. And as you'll see in the pages ahead, it shaped the world you are living in today. Because of the molasses flood, laws were changed to better protect people from poorly constructed tanks and buildings. Companies that are reckless about safety can be punished for harming people. And like all my I Survived books, the story of the molasses flood is really a story of people. As I researched this book, learned so much about the people living in Boston's North End at the time. Most of them were new arrivals to the United States —immigrants, mostly from southern Italy. They left everything behind to try to build new lives for themselves and their families. Carmen, Tony, and my other characters are all inspired by real people Ilearned about in my research. Many of them reminded me of my own immigrant grandparents who came to the United States during that same time-the early 1900s. They faced the same kinds of struggles-hard jobs, cramped apartments, crowded streets, sorrow over the people they had left behind. And just like Carmen and Tony, they were inspired by their dreams for a brighter future for themselves and their families. Thank you for journeying back in time with me!
