Early in 2025 I praised the Block, reposting this graphic. Someone replied “WHAT block?” and described a serial jerk who kept harassing her from a collection of similar cloned accounts. Now I have picked up a similar asshole, persistently asking for donations for his—I suspect—fake family in Gaza.

Amazing episode of the Freakonomics podcast “Is the Public Ready for Private Equity?” Trump is apparently paying back his donors in private equity and crypto, by forcing them down the throats of retail 401(k) savers.

If not all, at least listen from min 30 to 42.

Probably known to at least as many people today from the Mark Haddon's 2003 novel (and later play) “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” which similarly borrows from the Holmes story.

iNaturalist thinks this is the caterpillar of a Genista Broom Moth (Uresiphita reversalis). Found on a fence in my neighborhood, San Francisco Bay Area.

This must be the same doe and fawn. Apparently they like our neighborhood and have become permanent residents.

I wrote a paper on simulating the coevolution of camouflage in nature. The “background environments” were photos from nature, including several sets of leaves on ground, like this one of coastal oak. (Overlaid here with synthetic camouflaged “prey” evolving over time.) arxiv.org/abs/2304.11793

Trump’s foe in tariffs case? A legal group funded by conservatives.

The Supreme Court test of Trump’s power is backed by a group funded without disclosure by wealthy conservatives, highlighting a deep split over import taxes.

Saw this doe and fawn today. Good chance they are the same ones featured in the doorbell cam video above. The two locations were maybe 50 feet apart. But we are up to our keisters in deer around here (hills above SF Bay) so these might be a different pair.

From our doorbell cam today. First mom comes up to snack on our plants. Then mom's “gentleman caller” follows her. Then junior joins the parade.

Fun geeking out on this analysis of natural termite nest construction and reconstruction via simulation. Amazing shapes!

I was reading this substack thinking “this sounds just like what Scott Galloway was saying the other day.” Galloway's prediction seemed quite plausible to me.

¡Yo voté! Yes on CA Prop 50.

It's sad California has to hold a special election for this. And I'm disappointed that we have to undo the progressive nonpartisan redistricting commission that we fought hard to adopt in 2008. But I am thrilled to push back against the corrupt Trump/Abbot/Texas plan.
