I took this photo of the paper mill in Canton, NC. If you have not seen it a million times, you might not realize it is already in a fairly disassembled state. The iconic smokestacks are gone. I was standing on a pile of crushed stone when I took the shot.

It’s been nearly one hundred years since the Sunburst logging village burned to the ground in November, 1925.
Now, beneath the still waters of Lake Logan, burnt buildings rot. Gravestones vanish in the silt.

I’ve survived four catastrophic floods. Two of them in just the last five years.
The town I live in has been sitting under something dark for a long time.
I’ve taken all of that and hammered it into a novel.
It’s full of horror and Appalachian noir.
Act II is done.
