There will also be no media briefing after the execution. Instead, journalists will receive an email to announce that Joseph has been put to death.

In a viewing area, his wife Tahina will witness the execution. His sisters will not be attending. No family members I have spoken to have said they will attend, though there are still many I have not talked with. Of note, there will be no independent witnesses, such as journalists.

Which leads us to what will happen on execution day if it moves forward as planned. Joseph’s execution is expected to occur just after midnight on Wednesday. He will have his childhood pastor, who will be able to pray with him and hold his hand, by his side in his final moments.

If the federal courts do not approve the motion to stay, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb could step in and grant clemency, but he tells us at @21alivenews.com he will not weigh in either way until attorneys have exhausted their appeals.

A federal judge denied attorneys’ request to set aside the Indiana Supreme Court’s decision and rule in favor of a motion to stay the execution on Friday. That decision is being appealed to the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. It could go to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In a dissenting opinion, Justice Christopher Goff said “To ignore these findings now and proceed with execution without a current competency evaluation amounts to enabling his delusions—a state-sanctioned escape from suffering rather than a measured act of justice.”

Joseph has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Attorneys have held that his illness, which includes delusions of an ultrasound machine used to torture prisoners, makes it difficult to work with him. His paranoid behaviors predate the murders.

The majority of the state’s highest court said attorneys have not presented new evidence that would challenge a two-decade old competency finding, but rather confirmed his condition is the same. They also referred to an affidavit from Joseph, who asked to stop future appeals.

Currently, Joseph’s attorneys are seeking a motion to stay his execution to evaluate his competency in the federal courts. They attempted two motions to stay at the state level, however both were denied.

Joseph killed four people in Fort Wayne in 1997, including his brother, James Corcoran, his sister’s fiancé Robert Turner, and their friends Timothy Bricker and Douglas Stillwell.
Joseph Corcoran is scheduled to be given a lethal dose of pentobarbital before sunrise on Wednesday. If he is executed this week, it will be the first state-level execution in Indiana in more than 15 years.
