In the absence of evidence better to set out contextual reasons for interpretation - I've seen 'were likely...' and personally can't think of a 'no doubt' example.

If you haven't read Lessing on that could try The Summer before the Dark, or A Woman on a Roof. And insightful An Old Woman and her Cat. All online I think now. I've had some real pests - including drivers by - who don't get that some women love solitude and walking, it's not an age thing.

I get why what he said spoiled what you were doing. I walk every day and mostly prefer to see no-one. When I do - including cyclists and drivers - most people greet or smile.

I don't know why some people find it so difficult to cope with a passing person having their own thoughts and feelings and not connecting with them. Long time since I read Doris Lessing - but thought she wrote well about it when I did.
