"It's not so much that there aren't enough people in New York to do the jobs, but that the nature of the work has been structured where people travel, where the work moves from place to place," said Packman.

The Criminal Record Online Toolkit pulls together in one place relevant federal, state and local laws and forms across jurisdictions in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

"Unemployment is very low – it’s hard to do a lot better,” said Kircher. “How some of the current weaknesses will play out is much harder to tell.”

“BLS has fewer resources this time, because it is down 20% in its staffing, one-third of its leadership positions are vacant, and it’s possible they had even more people quit during the course of the shutdown,” Groshen said, referencing the large-scale layoff of federal workers earlier this year.

The timing and staffing levels of returning BLS employees could impact the collection of data, including the household survey for the jobs report, said Groshen.

Principal Federal Economic Indicators are about three dozen major statistical series used to describe the condition of the U.S. economy. (The jobs report, CPI, PPI, and PCE are among these.)

Groshen adds that data from consumer brands like DoorDash also won’t hold data on other critical consumer expenses like medical care or housing inflation, and “don’t have a long track record of providing reliable data” akin to federal agencies.

“Some prices are always falling, even [with] overall inflation. So, it’s not hard to choose some group of products that has falling prices. Likewise, most private data are by-products of business activities; the underlying data aren't designed to answer critical policy questions,” Groshen explains.
