Reading and understanding caselaw is a major transition for college graduates with great grades and LSAT scores. Going from high school to the CA bar with a long educational gap in between might be impossible.

Vermont is especially notable because it had a state supreme court justice who never went to law school until 2019: Marilyn Skoglund.
