BOOK #75, 2025
TEN BIRDS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD, by Stephen Moss (2024)
The title is slightly misleading; it’s humanity’s interactions with birds that has changed the world. But IGNORANCE, FEAR, & OVERALL A$$HOLISHNESS LEADS TO TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES FOR AVIAN POPULATION was too unwieldy.

BOOK #74, 2025
WHAT MOVES THE DEAD, by T. Kingfisher (2023)
Creepy take on Poe’s HOUSE OF USHER. Adding ghoulish twists to the narrative, Kingfisher delivers a tight gothic that’ll give you the willies. When a story makes a rabbit unnerving (or a hare), you know it’s working.

BOOK #73, 2025
THE WHITE LIBRARY, by Paul Voermans (2020)
Strange, exuberant sci-fi fantasy. In alternate history Australia, a librarian invents a travel portal that leads to physical transformation. A strange plot, but Voermans layers further absurdities that eventually overwhelm it.

BOOK #72, 2025
BLOOD MUSIC, by Greg Bear (1985)
Fascinating take on the Frankenstein scenario. A scientist discovers his cells have become self-aware & want answers as to their existence. It’s terrific fodder for dense sci-fi, but Bear’s talent for plotting keeps the story grounded.

BOOK #71, 2025
VENISS UNDERGROUND, by Jeff VanderMeer (2003)
Phantasmagorical wonder. Plot is secondary to presentation, a world as dazzling as it is dangerous, saturated with imagery in a voice henceforth known as “VanderMeerian.” It’s a spectacular accomplishment in world-building.

BOOK #70, 2025
THE QUEEN, by Nick Cutter (2024)
Extreme horror by a Canadian master. Cutter cranks it up to eleven, giving us an ultra-gory freakfest of missing kids, mad scientists, insect imagery, & gooey body horror. Hardcore sci-fi horror that hits all my feel-bad nihilistic buttons.

BOOK #69, 2025
LIGHT INTO INK, Rev. Ed., by S.M. Guariento (2025)
An exhaustively/lovingly researched look at the art of film novelization. Deep diving into 50 such titles, Guariento’s mix of scholarship and passion is a treat & a half. Highly recommended for book/movie lover.

11) THE EMPTY MAN, dir. David Prior (2025)
Ultra-creepy horror, a superb mix of detective thriller, urban legends, and cosmic horror. I’m still not positive it fully sticks the landing, but the overwhelming sense of dread Prior creates is undeniable.

10) SMILE dir. Parker Finn (2022)
Spooky little supernatural thriller that doesn’t change the world but certainly keeps you on edge throughout. Would make for a good double creature-feature with IT FOLLOWS.

9) ALIEN RESURRECTION dir. Jean-Pierre Jeunet (1997)
Top-notch practical effects, gorgeous design, Sigourney Weaver, & unexpected notes to the mythos. The least of the ALIENs, but there’s still a lot to enjoy & appreciate. Too bad the one liners all land with thuds.

BOOK #68, 2025
THE THING IN THE SNOW, by Sean Adams (2023)
Satirical look at workplace insanity. Within an all but abandoned building, employees perform menial tasks until a mysterious ‘thing’ appears.
As it turns out, the REAL ‘thing in the snow’ was the friends we made along the way.

BOOK #67, 2025
THE MARTIAN WAR, by Kevin J. Anderson (2012)
An enjoyable H.G. Wells pastiche. Mixing in characters & events from Wells’ works, Anderson uses Wells himself as point man in humanity’s first contact with aliens. It’s a fun romp, with an emphasis on Wells’ more fantastical sci-fi ideas.

BOOK #66, 2025
A SPINDLE SPLINTERED, by Alix E. Harrow (2021)
Lovely deconstruction/reconstruction of fairy tale mythos. Harrow twists the misogynistic tropes behind the legend to suit her noble needs. A great tale, with wonderful characters and fine, nay, ENCHANTING style.

7) THE MIST, dir. Frank Darabont (2007)
A nihilistic delight, and the best Stephen King adaptation outside of THE SHINING. The creature design is *chef kiss* and Marcia Gay Harden is one of the most terrifying (and sadly realistic) villains of the millennium.

6) JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY, dir. Adam Marcus (1993)
None of the Friday the 13ths are objectively “good.” But I give this one points for a) trying a new tact, b) having the best opening scene, and c) being (in the unrated cut) arguably the goriest of them all.

BOOK #65, 2025
THE PREDATOR, by Christopher Golden (2018)
Cookie-cutter novelization that highlights the movie’s failings. The movie smooths out its inconsistencies through charismatic actors & enjoyable action; lacking that, this lands with a thud, particularly in the lengthy ending.

5) THE OMEN, dir. Richard Donner (1976)
Time for some classic 1970s horror. There’s nothing like an evil child to summon the heebie-jeebies. I’ve never seen the sequels, perhaps it’s time I give them a watch.

4) EVIL DEAD RISE, dir. Lee Cronin (2023)
The Book of the Dead finally leaves the woods, landing in a decrepit high rise with many tasty victims to choose from. As gleefully bloody as it gets, an all-out gorefest that takes no prisoners. Fun, fun, fun. Groovy.

BOOK #64, 2025
SOUR CANDY, by Kealan Patrick Burke (2007)
Short, VERY creepy novella. Like the best episodes of The Twilight Zone, little is explained & it’s all that more unnerving as a result. A lovely little slice of cosmic horror mixed with the trials inherent in parenthood.

Arguably Jacques Tourneur’s masterpiece. A spooky slice of cosmic horror, rife with atmosphere, black magic, runes, terror, mystery, and even Stonehenge. Fantastic.

1) 7 DOORS OF DEATH (1981)
The truncated U.S. version of Lucio Fulci’s hallucinogenic gorefest THE BEYOND. Makes even less sense, but those images, man..,have white eyeballs ever looked spookier? Have popped-out eyeballs ever looked squishier? Has Hell ever looked less appealing?

BOOK #63, 2025
FAIRY TALE, by Stephen King (2022)
Expansive, immersive, overlong fantasy. As refreshingly earnest as it is, the story is too slight for its length; scenes are great but the full work crumbles. Still worthwhile, a gateway read to King’s grimmer DARK TOWERs.

BOOK #62, 2025
THE Z WORD, by Lindsay King-Miller (2024)
Enjoyable, surface-level LGBTQ+ zom-com. A woman yearns for her ex-girlfriend while zombies take over Pride. The story zips along with bursts of B-movie energy, but the protagonist is the least interesting/sympathetic character.
