My son who was 13 at the time and I went cross country on the train, first Portland to Boston, then back. It was damn-near spiritual. Reading books, teaching him to play card games in the club car, sleeping in coach and watching the scenery go by.

For the late 90s, early aughts it was pretty mid-level. "Be nice to people, racism is bad, etc." I didn't see it at the time a particularly liberal or conservative, just kind of British Roald Dahlish kinda stuff. When JK revealed the fact she's a bigot, it was an easy drop.

The problem I see is geography. Perhaps in the burbs this can happen, but out in rural America it's beyond bad and has been for a long time.
