Also, as an editor, I spend a lot of time telling people to shorten their papers to fit the word limit, and it's always a problem. So I guess it's almost like the paper is already as short as is reasonably possible in order to convey all the relevant information... But no one told Adobe

exactly, this and sciencedirect. I really wonder if on balance this is not doing far more harm than good even if (big if) the provided summaries etc are accurate. The share of people who open academic books and articles and need actual help reading them is probably quite small

the only thing I can say in sciencedirect's defense is that their reading assistant stopped popping up.
But it is still there, lurking, with its uninvited "Questions you could ask" which actively disrupt my class activity (students coming up with questions you could ask)
