Some years since I read it. I didn’t think it badly written (I would remember that). I do recall that it was, as you mentioned, a portrait of cowardice, and of betrayal, and an accurate picture of human nature. And it was better than Vidal’s book, which I always link it with-- same era, 1940s/50s.

I probably didn't enjoy Giovanni’s Room quite as much as you did -- but it is hands down a better novel and more real than The City and the Pillar, which was at best grotesque and at worst a hateful book. And I *liked* Gore Vidal!
