Earlier this year, we published "Gold Reimagined", spotlighting solutions we’ve supported through the #ASMChallenge. These include innovations in restoration and remediation, monitoring systems, and tools to assess the social and environmental impacts of mining.

This isn’t just a local issue.

Artisanal & small-scale gold mining produces nearly 25% of the world’s gold supply.

Yet when unregulated, it fuels mercury pollution, deforestation & biodiversity loss in some of the planet’s richest ecosystems.

Researchers found the extraction destroyed 4,500 hectares of forest, released 20 kg of mercury, and put 370,000 people at risk of mercury poisoning.

Gold here is "not worth its weight in gold."
