Understanding biodiversity change under human influences.

Loves being under water, lost in a book, or off on a wander.
To our surprise, we found shadow distributions covered very large portions of the expected area where species could occur. On average, negative impacts occured in 90% of potentially suitable areas, and 50% of potentially suitable areas were impacted by multiple anthropogenic threats.

We use SDMs and explainable AI to quantify the local contribution of environmental variables to species' habitat suitability scores.

This helped quantify the shadow distribution: where species would naturally occur, but are limited by human impacts.

What is a species "shadow distribution"?

This infographic helps communicate "shadow distributions" with stakeholders and environmental managers.

We used species distribution models to quantify this conservation concept for Swiss fishes.
