Agreed. This is what KS was supposed to be for. Personal, niche, weird, offbeat, individual crafts that otherwise wouldn't be able to exist. Unfortunately, the hobby spent too long chasing the wrong objectives.

I think it’s great! And “publishable” is such a meaningless word. None of us really know. And US pubs keep licensing “unpublishable” games from Japan where they have been given a space to flourish. Might as well just find out ourselves if it’s “publishable”.

But now? Now designers aren’t holding themselves back. They’re not just trying to latch on to the hype cycle. Not just trying to predict and appease the few publishers who even take outside pitches. It feels exciting to be a game designer again. Thanks @danthurot.bsky.social for highlighting them!

I’ve seen so many game designers cut themselves off from amasing ideas because “publishers won’t even look”. I saw a publisher walk around a playtest event saying some form of “that won’t sell” to every interesting idea after just a quick glance. Causally sowing the seeds of doubt.
