“No less an authority than the United Kingdom’s former Prime Minister, Liz Truss”

That’s a real sentence that someone wrote, which made it into Trump’s legal filing.

That’s an oversimplified summary of what he’s saying, Sam.

His core points in that post are that -

a. Brexit was a strategic error for the UK, based on profound misunderstanding of geopolitics and economics work now.

b. Transactionalism isn’t enough. There needs to be a desire to join for peace

Agree. What astounds me is not just his analysis but his recall. Every post is filled with links evidencing his points. During the Brexit process, his ability to hold Brexiters to account for their inconsistency and mendacity was peerless - and amazing. He must be the world’s best user of Notes. 🤣

Warning: Don’t read it unless you want to be reminded of Dominic Raab.

… In Georgia and Ukraine there are people risking and losing their lives to join a strong, protective, power- and sovereignty-sharing group of states. They’re not doing that to join the Common Customs Area or the Common Agricultural Policy.

There is a lot of work to do to build that political …/7

… that a great many people in the 27 remaining member states *truly* saw the EU that way meant that they never really understood the scale of the hurt and fear their behaviour was causing.

It also meant (and still means) that they can’t fully understand what’s involved in trying to rejoin. …/6

… Niall shared. You are right. The missing element in the British conversation about rejoining is not transactional or economic: it’s about belief in the pooling of sovereignty in the interests of peace.

During the Brexit process (2015-2021), the fact that so few people in the UK comprehended …/5
