no shade to op who has spoken out against the misogynist backlash but while the essay may be shallow and intellectually moribund to call any criticism modern political standards is incorrect. visual pleasure and narrative cinema came out in 1975, only 2 years after cutie honey!
i’m a 90s sailor moon fan but there’s a direct line to it and the dozens of panty shots the staff added (not that naoko takeuchi didn’t enjoy drawing a tit) from the 70s sex comedy cutie honey, which tells you exactly what it is on the tin (anime benny hill with a sword)
the problem is the essay’s hook: criticising commodification in a genre CREATED to sell plastic tat to little girls. these shows can have progressive writing IN them 👇, but as a fellow media grad i’ll put it in #adornocore terms: don’t expect revolution from the culture industry
