They're quite popular. My mother used to have them along our front yard. I think the sorest my back ever got while doing fine gardening was having to deadhead a 50' row of them on a wet day. I could hardly stand straight at the end.

That looks like an Orange Daylily (Hemerocallis fulva).

Well, that's why you would clip it back to the base and only singe the ground area to try to kill the roots.

I would suggest clipping it back first and then applying a flamethrower to the base. You wouldn't want to start a neighborhood fire.

Botanical verification between species often needs clearer pictures than that. I think it is Oriental rather than American Bittersweet based on the leaf shape alone, which I would say I can be about 95% sure of based on pic 2.

I'm 95% sure that's Oriental Bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) from what I can make out in the photos.
