I for one have the opinion that he is fully aware that they all want him, he's just not into them. He wants someone to explore the galaxy and have a career in Starfleet with, not some grape drying neo utopian peasant who will die within the same 20 square miles of where they were born and worked.

Stumbled across a video of the duel at the end, where it kept showing the kid misfiring and reloading, didn't know it was a joke edit till I went through the whole movie expecting a straight faced comedy.
