AVENGERS ANNUAL #22 also contains some early artwork from @oeming.bsky.social in the form of some cool pin-ups AND a back-up story featuring Marvel's best character, princess Ravonna fighting Daleks.

Bloodwraith debuted a few years earlier in the penultimate AVENGERS ANNUAL (#23, 1993) as part of Marvel's Bloodlines-esque "introduce a new character in each annual" gimmick. Like most such character he never made a big splash, having to wait a full two years for his second appearance in UNPLUGGED

AVENGERS under Harras, Steve Epting and Tom Palmer was one of my earliest titles I followed in real time. I loved it back then and I still enjoy it today but as that team broke up the title rapidly spiraled. Harras was only providing plots for a while and things got dire even before the Crossing.

...which characters on this cover SHOULD still be dead?

I debated putting Terrax and Nighthawk on there but ultimately I don't mind them being around as much, even if their respective resurrections were dumb (and Terrax's latest one has never even been explained).

3D Man should also remain retired

A surprising amount of them but only until you realize most are golden age characters.

Nebulon should have an asterisk as he was supposed to return in the defenders in the 2000s but the book never got around to it and nobody has picked up on that thread.

But the real question here is...

I don't know why I made this.

WAIT NO! I forgot the Beetle Bailey christmas album so that's TWO non-Swedish comics that get one.

Why is there still a Beetle Bailey christmas album in Sweden?

I DON'T KNOW.
November 21, 2025 at 10:36 PM
And yes most Swedish-original comics are humor. That's just how we roll here.

More recent additions to the lineup include Uti Vår Hage (a comic created by a distant relative of mine) and Herman Hedning jy Jonas Darnell, who is a legend in his own time. He's right there at the halfway point between Garth Ennis and Lew Stringer.

What comics get christmas albums has varied immensely in the nearly 100 years the tradition has existed and today there are naturally fewer of them than before. Most that survive are genuinely Swedish comics like 91:an, Kronblom or the Phantom.
November 21, 2025 at 10:27 PM
To my UK friends, this tradition is very similar to the UK comics annuals.
November 21, 2025 at 10:24 PM
The tradition to publish special magazines for the christmas season began in the early 20th century and when comics hit the scene the idea of making annual christmas releases of comics seemed natural. Thus was born the christmas album, starting in 1930 and continuing to this day.

First off: "album" in European comics refers to a comic that is roughly magazine-size, square-bound or stapled, with soft or hard covers and usually around 64-130-ish pages long. Think one of Marvel's old Graphic Novel line. It is a VERY popular format and the iconic way to read stuff like Tintin.

The last two weeks have been extremely busy at the comics store where I work as we had the release of the annual christmas albums and the attendant deluge of orders.

...okay I realize that nothing of what I said makes any sense to a non-Scandinavian reader so walk with me for a moment.
November 21, 2025 at 10:17 PM
Yes, Zanotto's actual art style is a lot more Eurocomics than that. In the grand tradition of many other latin-sphere artists like Romero.

I finally got around to read this and it is way, way better than it has any rights to be. There's the expected level of meta fuckery from Morrison but it's executed well and lovingly with even some good jokes about the typical Morrison comic experience. The back-ups were also great, if way too short
November 20, 2025 at 7:48 AM
oh yeah it's EXTREMELY obvious in some of the issues. i actually answered this question a few years back when somebody asked...
November 18, 2025 at 11:44 PM
oh yeah Marrow is just buck-ass naked for a few issues until editorial hold a gun to the head of the artists and force them to start drawing clothes on her.

before that the colorists had to "tone her down" for the poor innocent readers
November 18, 2025 at 11:39 PM
and if their deal is feeling ugly... he'll literally make them hot

still cracks me up Davis intended Marrow to run around in just a bone bikini, Witchblade-style, after she got "prettified" but the editor said "NOPE" and had the colorist put a blue tint on her skin

Charles Xavier in X-Men #97

(or in X-Men #56)

He does this a lot.

This wasn't what I intended to finish next but things don't always work out the way we want, do they.

Tapestry? Yeah I can see the correlation.

I did include her in my super-quick Psylocke Corps scribbles at least!

And yeah Amanda is "dead". Not Dead.

Love seeing Black Widow's first costume make it into Rivals and so many people being utterly confused by it.
