When I was a kid I caught a common 'mud' turtle and brought it home for a pet.
Whenever possible, I would bring it out to the yard in the grass and without fail it would start walking in the direction where I caught it over a mile away.
He was my buddy for 15 yrs.
He never forgot where home was.

We had a Sheltie, we could drop the lead, she knew it but she maintained the distance of the lead. We could pick it up any time.
We had a Dobe, you could us a piece of thread for a lead. Sh wouldn't leave the yard without a lead, no matter how hard you coaxed her.
