Same on getting 500 pretty casual through just progressing game. I had about 550 battles with all other requests and story stuff done. The gameplay loop is pretty good so it does not feel pointless beating those people a bunch. More money to spend on fossils and clothes.

You might know this already, but the last mission is really time consuming (win 1000 pokemon battles). If you get the DLC, you get a bunch of additional requests that makes getting the shiny charm a lot easier.
