It does have to be manually switched on, and you would need to set up port forwarding on your router to be visible, but enough people have the instructions, they'll be shared if it ever comes to it.

"Poor man's matchmaking" like some indie PC games do, where it keeps a directory of the last 100 IPs it has learned of other machines you've played with, and pings them directly to see if they're available. You can manually add to the list.

You are very right. It was like that.

I think it will be like cities with urban dynamics. Where they expand and shrink repeatedly as time goes on.

The early internet was community sprawl. Then there was the collapse into larger, collective, single sites with multiple communities.
