There are so many great endings, but the ending of Scarlet Street really blew me away. It’s so incredibly bleak and an unusual way to meet the requirement of punishing the wrongdoers.

Favorite Film Noir Duo
Joan Bennett and Dan Duryea
So great at tormenting Edward G. Robinson…

Lesser-Known Film Noir Everyone Should See: I’m going with Zero Focus, a Japanese film that I saw at Noir City last year. It’s about a woman whose new husband disappears and she is determined to find out what happened to him; it was riveting.

Film Noir Character You’d Trust the Least with Your Secrets: I’m thinking Phyllis Dietrichson from Double Indemnity. She’d use anything she knew about you, if she thought it would get her ahead.

Favorite Gloria Grahame Noir
I love Gloria Grahame, so this one is tough for me. I’m going with In a Lonely Place because she plays off of Bogart so well. Although I’m very tempted to say The Big Heat because of *that* heartbreaking performance.

Favorite Dan Duryea Film Noir
Dan Duryea is one of the ultimate film noir sleezes, and so good in so many noirs. There’s only one choice for me, though: Scarlett Street. He’s so despicable as Kitty’s abusive, manipulative, grifter of a boyfriend.

Favorite Line in a Film Noir: It’s not my favorite (which would be something quippier), but I’m going to go with one that feels appropriate now, from The Big Clock. “Isn’t it a pity? The wrong people always have money.”

Noir that was ahead of it’s time
I know it’s a neonoir, but I’m still disappointed that we didn’t get a series of Easy Rawlins films. Devil in a Blue Dress was not appreciated when it was released.

Movie That Made You a Noir Fan: Laura. AMC (remember when they showed classic films?) had a noir week when I was a teenager. It was the first time I’d heard the term. I know I saw more than one of the films, but Laura was the one that stuck with me.

Best character introduction: That would have to be possibly the greatest character introduction of all time, the introduction of Harry Lime in The Third Man.

Best Opening Scene: There’s so many great ones, but, even though I know it’s the obvious choice, I have to go with the long, unbroken tracking shot in Touch of Evil.
