It's not hiding, it's in video. The exact quote is "he was probably a nice guy, to some people, in public." We explicitly say there were "two public versions" of him. We start describing one version so that viewers who knew that version would be more open to hearing about the other, actual version.

I mentioned that in our podcast yesterday, and in the video in question I pointed out that Kirk's death was in part a result of the political climate he helped create and foster.

I just very plainly explained to you the intention and meaning behind the actual quote, which included the clause "if you think gun violence in this country is a tragedy." Clunky maybe, but there's no "bit" to buy. You are simply choosing to ignore the words and explanation for no reason.

Perhaps we weren't explicit enough, but I think people are conflating what we called the tragedy of gun violence in America with Kirk being dead. Nowhere did we say that anyone had to feel bad about his death or him being dead and in fact I thought we explained why people might feel good about it.
