Oof. Marx thought he’d created a science of Economics that could predict the future. He was trying to reach the end of history just like his predecessors. The reason people feel like they’ve unlocked some hidden knowledge is because it’s basically a religion leading people to the promised land. It’s been referred to as kind of Gnosticism for reason. It’s seductive because it tries to explain all problems through material means and that’s easy to grasp: Your life would be so much better if those landlords and business owners weren’t stealing your labor! This system robs you of the authenticity of your work! You deserve all of fruits of your labor, not those mean old investors! It’s us against them! Think about how much life would improve if you were in charge! A dictatorship of the people! I’m being glib, but that’s basically what you have to grasp to get on board. Don’t get me wrong, he had some reasonable critiques of capitalism, but all of his theorizing about value and work and markets sound nice, but are pretty boneheaded. His predictions never materialized and the major economies that tried to implement versions of his ideas turned into totalitarian shit holes where everyone either starved, got sent to the gulag, or became a party puppet. Not exactly the perfect eternal system he promised.
