Only four of 20 ecoregions are covered in the conservation landscape in CA reports Dr. Rod Kelsey from The Nature Conservancy. What’s missing ?? CA’s oak woodlands. Chino Hills State Park has some of this habitat protected. We need more—like the Aera Energy/IKAV lands in the Missing Middle.

Dr. Rod Kelsey from The Nature Conservancy asked the question: are we doing enough to get to 30x30? Check out the Biodiversity Network’s analysis.

CNRA Deputy Secretary of Habitat and Biodiversity Meghan Hertel encourages everyone to check out the map using this QR code to help get all conserved lands “on the map.”

CNRA Deputy Secretary Meghan Hertel spoke about 30x30. California kicked this off in 2020 and it was then codified and will outlive this Administration. Mid-month she will be the second female to hold the CA Dept of Fish and Wildlife Director. ❤️❤️

Katie Barrow’s explains the importance of maps to conservations efforts. That’s been true for our conservation work as well. If we hadn’t been able to read a map, there would’ve been many roads in Lower Aliso Canyon. We stopped them all. 😉

Colin Barrow’s promoted community engagement and that giving a voice to plants and animals comes from participating in things like iNaturalist observations. This woman (below) started with iNaturalist and then became an advocate for public lands. Once the seed was planted, it grew.

Emily Perkins with USGS has been using a portion of San Diego’s sales tax measure to track rare plants in a monitoring team. This sales tax measure preceded the Orange County measure that HFE negotiated with FHBP. Yay for tax dollars supporting conservation. ❤️

There is a big gap in floristic research in Nevada. Western systems need the research because Indigenous knowledge has been erased. The Puente-Chino Hills Wildlife Corridor is part of the CA Floristic Province and is well researched.

The San Diego Bird Alliance and Barona Cultural Center and Museum undertook an effort to redesignate the City of San Diego’s Official Flower to a native species. Blue eyed grass (Kuushaaw) was the winner. Do you think the City of Costa Mesa would do this? How about Newport Beach?

Keynote Zoë Schlanger relayed that plants have “touch awareness” and she wondered if maybe the entire plant is a brain. After injury, a plant sends signals to the rest of the plant for a warning of the injury. See photo below of the plant warning in effect.

We are at the CA Native Plant Society conference today. Keynote speaker Zoë Schlanger just said plants can change their chemical or nutritious makeup to protect themselves from pests. They also have a regional “dialect.” That’s sooo cool.
