PhD student at UCLA studying housing, local politics, public opinion, and how race runs through it all. @divasunglasses on TikTok. Yes, yes, I am another dude with a podcast: "Reject Modernity, Embrace Tradition"
And the most recent congressional research service describes it like this:

"The purpose of these poverty measures when they were developed was to accurately measure economic privation rather than to describe the full complement of resources a person or family needs to be self-sufficient."

The original poverty measure was much more intended to measure insufficiency rather than sufficiency.

Orshansky put it like this: "if it is not possible to state unequivocally 'how much is enough,' it should be possible to assert with confidence how much, on an average, is too little."

Like, not to be a jerk here or anything, but I do actually think that the term poverty should describe actual poverty, which anyone should be able to see is *not* the condition of a family making $140k a year.

Are they totally free of any financial concern? No. Are they in poverty? Absolutely not.

For democrats it's like: "Did this Democrat defraud the American people by speaking to an international audience in another language??"

Meanwhile for republicans it's like: "I mean sure he has ties to white nationalists but what can we reeaaally make of that fact exaaaactly?"
